It is 7:00 a.m. and I'm sitting at our desk in the lobby. My husband, Lynn, usually opens the lobby but is unable to this morning because he has the flu. I've been running the motel for the last two days while he recuperates.
The coffee is brewed. The water is hot for tea and cocoa. Everything is ready for our guests to get their caffeine fix.
This is a peaceful time of day. I look out the office window at the bridge. The lights are still on. A pink ray of light washes over the pool deck indicating a beautiful day ahead. The winds, from the northwest, are blowing enough to wake the water up and roll the waves ashore. A freighter is sneaking by under the bridge. The loons and geese are bathing and fishing in the straits. Every now and then the loons voice is gently carried through the morning air. Most of my guests are sleeping peacefully. Soon they will be wandering around, with coffee in hand, enjoying all the peace and beauty of the morning on the Straits of Mackinaw. Some stroll the beach. Others jog or take a brisk walk. Everyone will enjoy the peace and beauty of this fall like morning.

The Frost Is On the Pumpkins
Over the years I have learned to decorate for fall no later than the week after Labor Day because the weather can take a downward turn in temperatures and it makes working outside difficult. I placed an order with a local farm for 16 bundles of cornstalks and 9 large pumpkins. They were delivered on a day that promised to have rain and wind. After taking delivery, I had my eyes to the western sky as the promised storms were looming. My staff and I had a blast carrying the stalks against the wind and tying them to the legs of the sign, across the porch on the front of the motel, in the drive-thru and by the pool deck. There were times with the wind gusts that I felt we were going to be airborne! We had a blast making fun of our monster walks as we carried the stalks around. We placed pumpkins in front of the stalks just as the rain moved in. It looks very festive.
